Game balance when you can't patch the items
In a normal game, if an item turns out too strong, you patch its stats. In Blockchain Cuties, items and characters were owned by players on-chain, and changing what people had paid for was off the table.
Our first season was a commercial success — and it flooded the game with strong items. They never broke, never got used up, never left the game. Over time the economy inflated: new items had nothing to compete with, and old ones lost their value.
Since we couldn’t nerf anything, the fix had to be a new mechanic: crafting that burns items. Players combine several items into a better one, and the inputs are destroyed. That gave the economy a sink it never had. The balance started to recover — about a year after the problem appeared.
What I’d design in from day one now:
- Every faucet needs a sink: wear, consumption, burning, upgrades that destroy inputs.
- Plan seasons with an exit for their items before you launch them.
- In Web3, balance changes are product features, not hotfixes — they take months, so model the economy before the first sale.
